Caribbean Genealogy Library Plans Re-Opening, Shares DPNR/Smithsonian Family Heirloom Workshops
CGL hopes to Open Very Soon: The past months have been filled with many volunteer hours cleaning the library and the collection, repairing and reorganizing. We are finally getting very close to reopening. There is still work to be done, but the library’s collection is mostly usable. Until we open with regular hours, we will try to accommodate researchers by appointment. If you would like to make an appointment, please email with your information and days and times that work for you.
Call for Volunteers: If you would like to help at the library with organizing the collection, as a volunteer librarian, with research inquiries, at events, with newsletters, fundraising, or in another capacity – please let us know. CGL is solely run by volunteers! We need your help. Become a volunteer. Email email@example.com for information.
Recovering Family Treasures Workshop:
Please note this workshop is being held on both St. Thomas and St. Croix, see locations, days and times below. Workshop hosted by Smithsonian and DPNR.
Residents in the U.S. Virgin Islands can learn how to preserve damaged personal heirlooms on Sunday, June 10, 2018 from 12pm to 3 pm at the Charles Wesley Turnbull Regional Public Library on St. Thomas; and on on Sunday June 16, 2018 from 10am to 1pm at the Fort Frederik National Historic Landmark Site on St. Croix.
Experts will demonstrate how to handle, dry, and clean damaged objects and share tips on personal safety, setting priorities, and other preservation options. There will be a formal presentation followed by a question and answer period. This workshop is free and open to all who want to attend. The workshop will have examples of common personal heirlooms on display to demonstrate salvaging techniques. Due to safety concerns, please do not bring your damaged objects to the workshop. If you have specific questions about your personal heirlooms, feel free to bring images of each item to discuss with the preservation experts directly. *Again please note that the location of this workshop is Turnbull Library on St. Thomas; and Fort Frederik on St. Croix!
